Transcript Fred Marti, Homero Blancas, Coach Dave Williams, Babe Hiskey, and Kermit Zarley show off trophies they won at the All-America Invitational Tourney played in Houston. Cougars Capture NCAA Championship A team which Dave Williams said was "as good as any team Houston has sent to the NCAA tournament" vindicated its coach's judgment with a 10-stroke victory in the nationals. Kermit Zarley shot a 140. the only score in the tourney below par. to win medalist honors. Mark Hopkins was sixth with a 147. Wright Garrett scored 150 and Homero Blancas 151 over 36 holes. The four-man team fired a 588. not including Fred Marti's 153, to easily top second place Oklahoma State. Blancas and Marti were named to the 1st and 2nd team All- America squads, respectively, by the coaches. Blancas was a repeater. Golf Team Unbeaten in Tournament Play Dave Williams' linksmen won the Tucker Invitational, the Border Olympics, the Florida Intercollegiate, the Galveston Intercollegiate, the Southern Invitational and their own All-America Invitational. The Border Olympics total of 1.129 was a record 23 under par. The freshmen, paced by Phil Brownlee and Jay Sigel, won the Tucker Invitational and their own tournament. All American Homero Blancas won the school tourney, a 144- hole affair, with a 575. Kermit Zarley, Fred Marti and Wright Garrett followed him in that order.
