Transcript CROSS COUNTRY Houston's cross country runners won the AAU championship for the third straight year but were knocked off the NCAA throne they had occupied for a year by upstart Oregon State. In addition, the harriers won impressively in each of the four invitational meets entered. Ex John Macy led the Houston Track Club to the AAU victory with a 3rd place finish. Barry Almond was 7th, Laurie Elliott 9th, Pat Clohessy 10th and Geoff Walker 15th. With course record holder Al Lawrence, slowed by an injured Achilles Tendon, finishing 41st, the Cougars placed third in the NCAA meet behind Oregon State and San Jose State. Clohessy finished 2nd, Almond 5th, Walker 12th, and George Rankin 62nd. INDOOR TRACK Laurie Elliott and Pat Clohessy paced Cougar performances in indoor meets. Elliott won the mile in San Antonio, Dallas and the Bluebonnet Invitational in the Sam Houston Coliseum. Clohessy took the two-mile event in San Antonio and the Bluebonnet and finished second in the Millrose event in New York with a fine 9:00.8. He was also second in the AAU three-mile run. The freshmen won the mile relay in San Antonio and Boyd Tim- mons took the 60-yard dash in Dallas. Bluebonnet winners also included Bob Cozens (1000-yards), Barrie Almond (600-yards), Bob Cooper (frosh-880) and the varsity mile relay team of Earl Harlan, Bob Waterman, Cozens and Almond. FIRST PLACE WINNER Pat Clohessy receives his gold medal for the two-mile event at the Bluebonnet Invitational. THE MOMENT BEFORE the race tension is everywhere. 132
