Transcript | $tO\p, foop and Cjtul Mens basketball player Gee Gervin plays aggresive defense when trying to get the ball from the other team. Gee tries to lose his defender as he brings the ball up the court. Photo by Kevin Harwerth Gee Gervin continued his domination of C-USA, leading the Cougars in scoring and assists in his senior season After winning a scoring title and becoming the first player in UH history to be named to the All- Conference USA First Team, Gee Gervin was expected to do much of the same this season. But he didn't exactly shrug at the expectations, he thrived on them. If there's one thing that doesn't phase this senior point guard, it's the limelight. He grew up in it. Gervin is the proud son of former NBA star and current Hall of Famer George Gervin. He grew up on the basketball court and constantly found himself around the likes of Michael Jordan, Julius Erving and Kareem Abdul Jabar, to name a few. "A lot of today's players don't know about the 'old school' players, and I was around them all my life," Gervin said. "My dad, 'Dr. J', Charles Barkley — all of those different guys taught me different parts of the game." Gervin thrived under the watch of one of those "old school" players: Clyde Drexler. Under his guidance, Gervin led C- USA in both scoring (20.9) and assists (4.1). "I'm honored to be the son of a Hall of Famer with a coach that will be a Hall of Famer, so I couldn't ask for anything better," Gervin said. Gervin averaged 20.3 points to start the season, but a dip in his scoring, a result of carrying much of the Cougars' load, saw his average sink to 18 by season's end. It was a disappointing year for Gervin, who expected bigger things from himelf and his teammates in his senior season. He, along with fellow senior Kenny Younger and first-year forward George Williams, were expected to lead UH to its first winning season in four years. Nevertheless, No. 13 will go down as one of the greatest UH basketball players of all time. • by Josh Gajewski #13 Guard 6-2, Sr.-IL San Antonio, Texas MacArthur HS San Jacinto CC Gervin came off a 1998-99 season in which he became the first player in G USA history to lead the conference in both scoring (20.6) and assists (3.9). i This year, Gervin continued to carry jmuch of the scoring load for UH. He started off hot, but fatigue caught up (with him as his average dwindled to 18 | points per game. Nevertheless, he was the spark plug that provided the Cougars with energy when it was needed. He averaged 13.5 points in the conference tournament. 1999-2000 GP FG-PCT. REB. A ST TO PTS. 31 .427 3.6 95 42 90 18.0 224 SPORTS GEE GERVin • 225 |
