"We have dedicated more of our time to creating a quality, award-winning yearbook through a balance of photos and articles," photographer Barry Watson said. In order to achieve this balance, staff members began the year by refining their skills at the annual Sam Houston State yearbook workshop. It is there that Houstonian staffers began brainstorming about the 2000 yearbook through competition against other schools. While staffers did not win any awards, they did develop this year's theme, "It's only the beginning." Attributing the theme to endless brainstorm sessions and countless headaches, Houstonian Managing Editor Linda Canales explains how they came up with this theme. "We thought we should focus on how the new century repre sents the beginning of many possibilities awaiting us," Canales said. Attending the workshop was only one of the steps staffers took in order to ensure a quality yearbook. They also spent many hours designing layouts, which incorporated the latest in graphic and type design, as well as organizing the sections. In addition, Houstonian staff members spent time outside of the office working one-on-one with the UH community. For example, the Houstonian held its bi-annual Photo Week when students and faculty had their photos taken for the yearbook. In the spring Photo Week, students participated in a drawing to receive prizes like a dinner for two from UH food service provider Chartwells. While staffers spent many late nights sitting at computers, many felt it was worth it to produce a book they would be proud to put their name on. "I think the book is a positive reflection of UH and the people who spend their days here," Assistant Photography Editor Pin Lim said. •hy Michelle Norton IN AWE Amanda Yates stares in awe at her people spread.
