Transcript Swimmers' First Season Coach Phil Hansel faced a stone wall as he organized the University's first swimming team. As the team faced intercollegiate competition, Hansel met an obstacle when his star backstroker, Bob Yates, was declared ineligible for competition because of a mix-up in transcripts. The team got moral victory from their first win against Texas Tech in March. Hope for a powerful '58 team came with announcement of J. D. Brown's intentions of joining the Cougar tankmen. Brown is a member of an All-American swimming team and holder of a number of Oregon swimming records. Coach Hansel preps tankers in basics before a meet. The first University of Houston swimming team: First row: Bob Yates, Buzzy Black, and Bob-Kendricks. Second row: Coach Hansel, Pete Goubeaud, Armond Prescott, and Horacio Pantuliano. Third row: Jack Becker, Ed Bower, Don Bernett, and Bobby Linder. 443
