Transcript | some men's sports. In complying with the national ruing, the Athletic Department chan- elled S90,000 into the expansion of he shallow women's program. Under director Dr. Sue Garrison, ini- tial efforts produced a six sport schedule, including badminton, volleyball, basketball, tennis, track and field, and winning. In attracting athletes to the quickly organized and as yet unpubli- cized sports, the department awarded close to 30 full or partial scholarships to women. Outlining the differences between her program and the hastily assembled departments of other schools affected by the ruling, Dr. Garrison emphasized the existence of the original four sports. "Our program was here already," she said, "and we have expanded it through the general interest of the athletic program. We had four well- rounded programs here before Title IX even reared its head." |
