Transcript | Roundballers make historic entry into Southwest Conference MEW KIDS For over a decade the pride of the Southwest, the UH basketball team found its entrance into the Southwest Conference to be a very sobering experience. Facing teams emotionally sparked by the prospect of defeating a perennial national power, Houston learned about defeat and humility. Coach Guy Lewis had only one senior in his basketball arsenal and was forced to employ the league's youngest starting five in conference play, Otis Birdsong, David Marrs, Chet Thompson, Cecile Rose and Al Winder.
