Transcript | Infant backfield puts in surprising performances Paul Humphreys anticipates a Rice snap. Attesting to the secondary's talent was their ability to hide their unusual lack of experience. The group had totaled only 323 minutes varsity playing time before the season, but the fearsome foursome still commanded respect from opposing teams and got it. At the offset of the as yet unblemished season Anthony Francis, right cornerback, said, "I just want to do anything to help the team." The nervous Alonzo Giles added, "I hope we have no long passes go through us." Gary Drake, along with all the others, just wanted "to see us win all the games." This was not the case, but as in Mark Mohr's reflective comment, "I think we surprised a lot of people. I think we did a lot better than expected." Left Steve Gillioz, left linebacker, crunches his Rice opponent while Ross Echols looks on from ground level. Below Mascot Kathy Ferguson signals a Cougar victory on the shoulders of cheerleader Billy Bishop. Football 131 |
