Transcript | Astrodome event brings out the Texan in UH sophisticates In February, thousands of Houstoni- ans and scores of UHers dug out their Stetson hats, leather vests, cowboy ooots and spurs in another yearly [ effort to recapture the western spirit. After ten days of the 44th Annual Livestock Show and Rodeo, over 450,000 had braved the mile-long lines to reach the Astrodome, as UH's astroturfed football home was transformed into South Texas' answer to Dodge City. The diversity of license plates proved large portions of these crowds to be from all corners of our country, making this year's event the most successful ever. The livestock show draws mostly youngsters from the 4-H club and Future Farmers of America who parade their "pride and joys" before judges and potential buyers. This year's champion steer was auctioned for $35,000, while the prize pig brought $23,000 and the turkey, $10,100. Performers at the three-hour long shows of calf scrambling, bareback, bull and bronc riding, barrel and chuck wagon racing were Tanya Tucker, Freddy Fender, Rufus, Olivia Newton- John, Charlie Pride, Charlie Rich, Glen Campbell and Mac Davis. Above These two average cows could bring up to $500 to their proud owner, with total sales topping $150,000. Left This Brahman bull is staked before the judges for a championship that could bring his owner over $5,000. . |
