Transcript | Big city bonuses Right The UH campus sprawls adjacent to a bustling downtown. Above Steve Ellis (Fr-Pol) glides through an afternoon, fostering the revival of the '60s skateboarding craze. Right UC Coffeehouse provides the same disco atmosphere as local hotel lounges and singles' bars. 80 The Big City Hometown Houston keeps weekenders happy Shedding the burden of cumbersome books, lengthy exams and late night cramming sessions, UH students consistently rejoiced in their weekly two-day recesses. Although most of UH's 30,000 were unconcerned commuters who came to UH for a taste of its nationally rated academic programs, weekend activities usually made a whole from a fragmented student body. While many Saturday and Sunday afternoons showed coastal freeways jammed with beach bums in search of sun, sand and surf, most UHers sought entertainment in the big city after snoozing through breakfast hours. They spent sunny days frisbee- ing, hiking and biking in the city parks, browsing in bustling shopping malls, or simply relaxing at home after a rough week. Student night life centered around crowded multi-cinemas, foosball and air-hockey tables in game rooms, smoke-filled discos, and the ever-popular beer busts that always drew hundreds of the university's socialites. Below left A campus cyclist makes a speedy jaunt to class, daydreaming of that Saturday afternoon bike hike. Below Big name rock groups shuffle in and out every weekend for concerts in Houston halls.
