Transcript | who are we now? "The bicentennial?" cracked the talk show host, "Shoot, I thought it was last year.'' By September 1975 we couldn't sweeten our iced tea without seeing flashes of red, white, and blue, and before the real year arrived we were sick of all the celebrating. We were spiritless rather than inspired. Few of us ventured beyond the commercial trappings of the holiday. Who were all these people painting stars and stripes on buildings, sporting old glory lapel pins, and printing bicentennial class schedules? We were yet another face of the changing American character, a 200- year old character. We could remember the rebels, the New Dealers, and the moon walkers, but we couldn't identify ourselves. 4 Who are we now? Who are we now? 5 |
