Photo By: Cam McElligott The 96-97 Lady Cougars basketball team spent the weeks leading up to the season under a cloud of high expectations. But the unfortunate loss of their most talented player sent the entire team into a spiraling tailspin, and the Cougars finished the year with their worst record ever. J. he Houston Lady Cougars basketball team was not very Luckey in its inaugural Conference USA season. The 1996-97 team was to return a supremely talented front court duo and bring in a highly touted recruiting class, but the foundation for the team collapsed before pre-season practice even started. What might have been was a combination of Pat Luckey, three-time All-Southwest Conference first team selection and Jennifer Jones, a force in the paint and on the boards, teaming with talented-but-raw transfers Timicha Kirby, LaRonda Walker, and 6-foot-6 inch freshman center Tracey Allen. For a team that had finished very strong in the final Southwest Conference Tournament, the 1996-1997 season was looked upon with high expectations. But Luckey had academic problems, lost her eligibility and did not enroll at UH for the fall. While the rest of the team was Out Of Luck Adam Bums still considered talented, the search for chemistry turned from gold to lead. Most of the team showed up to the first practice out of shape and struggled from the start, losing nine of their first 11 games. Things got worse when conference play began — Houston lost all 15 conference games, including two losses to the UNC - Charlotte 49ers by an average of 11.5 points, the only two conference wins for UNCC. The Lady Cougars lost 11 in a row at one point in the season, a school record. One game that symbolized the whole season for the Lady Cougars was when the Tulane Green Wave came into Hofheinz Pavilion on February 5 and handed Houston a 46-point spanking. Jones and Kirby were solid night in and night out, combining for 31.3 points and 15 rebounds per game, but they had little back up to support them on a regular basis. Fleceia Comeaux was the only other offensive support, averaging a mere 6.5 points per game. Point guard Miranda Serna lost her starting job when it was discovered she couldn't hold onto the ball unless she glued it to her hands. (Continued on Page 255) 252 Athletics |
