Transcript | TO SERVE "I found (SGB) beneficial because it is such a small community within (the Honors) College." SGB member Brenda Johnson Don LeGrand Expanding into community service was one of the goals the Student Governing Board set for itself. SGB served as a sounding board where honors students could bring their concerns. Any member of the Honors College automatically fulfilled the requirements to be a part of SGB. To become a member of the Honors College, students had to submit an application, writing sample, high school activites, SAT scores, class rank and GPA. "SGB was the first organization I joined when I came to the University of Houston. I found it beneficial because it is such a small community within our college!' said member Brenda Johnson. SGB has five officers responsible for organizing events and holding meetings. The officers held their position for a year after a spring election. Some of the events officers scheduled included expanding community service to add other activities, such as Habitat for Humanity. The group held several volunteer projects each semester. Meetings were held weekly and 30 to 40 members attended. SGB members also had the option to tutor area students in elementary grades to high school. Opprtunities to aid younger students were announced at meetings. One of the main responsibilities SGB takes on every year is honors evaluations, evaluations of Honors College professors and classes placed in a binder for Honors students to view. SGB officers also organized social events for members, including zoo outings and pre-football game cookouts. Student Governing Board: (Front row) Zeke Ziliak, Kelly Nine, David Rowell, Joel Westra.
