Throop. Photo by: Edmond Vahedi Freshman Honors Lana Khawaja Character, wisdom and leadership are three characteristics Alpha Lambda Delta-Phi Eta Sigma members hold high. A freshman honor society, ALD-PES holds fundraisers, participates in social events and provides hours of community service. "We helped with the annual Halloween event at the YMCA, and held a coat and blanket drive for the homeless this past Thanksgiving!' said President Samidha Worah. Requirements for becoming a member of ALD-PES are competitive. "Incoming transfer students cannot have more than 36 hours transferred from another institution, and student need to have completed at least nine hours at the University of Houston with a 3.5 GPA!' said Anh Nguyen, ALD-PES secretary. The group currently has 143 members, each serving a one-year term. Members help prepare for the annual induction ceremony by seeking out students who are qualified to join the organization. "We do this by going down to the Office of Academic Records and pulling up their names!' Worah said. "We sent out 600 letters (to qualified students) and only got back a response of less than 100. "Sometimes we accidentally overlook students, and if they have heard of our organization they contact us (to join)',' Worah said. Qualified students who are interested in joining must turn in a $75 check for dues and a copy of his or her most recent transcripts.
