"I am personally delighted to have someone like Smith to build upon the advances we have seen over the last 18 months. The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate and the UH council chairs are excited at the prospect of his assuming the combined position;' said Dr. Karl Kadish, former Faculty Senate President. Under Smiths leadership, the school increased its research funding to more than $173 million annually, nearly doubled its annual support from donors to $79.7 million and increased support for undergraduate teaching. "I feel that Smith will be an outstanding asset and representative of the UH System and UH. The Students' Association looks forward to working closely with him in the future;' said SA President John Moore. Leaving his post at the University of Utah, Arthur Smith became the University of Houston's first chancellor/president.
