Photo by: Edmond Vahedi Year in Review Super Bowl spectacular sparkles, Nancy Escamilla StllflS Perhaps the biggest television event of the year, Super Bowl XXXI drew fans of all types. Devoted and not-so-devoted football fans joined in by cheering, partying and observing the spectacle. "It was a cheesy Super Bowl',' said graduate chemistry major Fernando Somoza. The Bowl hoopla included live entertainment, new commercials and antics of enthusiastic fans. The Super Bowl returned to New Orleans, where the Superdome hosted its first Super Bowl since 1990. The setting and young players were a welcome change to previous games. This year, unlike most others, the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers would not be fighting it out for the title. Entertainment stars included Luther Vandross (singing the national anthem), ZZ Top, James Brown and Blues Brothers John Goodman, Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi. At the start of the game Jan. 26, the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots were ready to jump out of their skins. However, after the first touchdown by the Packers offense, the players settled down to the business. The moment had come to show the public what each was made of. With offensive players like Terry Glenn, Ben Coates, Dave Meggett, Curtis Martin and Drew Bledsoe, the Patriots were an almost even match for the Packers. However, William Henderson, Gilbert Brown, Santana Dotson, Reggie White and Brett Favre proved the Packers was a team to be reckoned with. A memorable play of the Super Bowl was Desmond Howards kickoff return of 99 yards for a touchdown, the decisive play of the game. S M Although New England Coach Bill Parcells had the experience to lead the Patriots to victory, Green Bay Coach Mike Homgren and Defensive Coordinator Fritz Shurmur sucessfully made lineup adjustments to keep the team going Both teams offensive forces were equally strong, but the Packers constantly used suprising manuevers that proved disasterous to the Patriots, ending the game Packers 35, Patriots 21. "I like Reggie White from the Packers. I think he deserved it (to win);' said Aime Ramirez, a freshman majoring in political science. Super Bowl |
