Transcript | Out with the Old... by D. Ryan Nonceaux Everyone knew it was coming.coming The only question was when, and on Sunday, March 1, Chet Gladchuk let the world know thai AJvin Brooks had been fired as the men's basketball coach at the University of Houston. The only real question was why Brooks was let go before the Conference USA tournament, when waiting a week longer would have seemed to make more sense. Gladchuk thought that the timing on the firing was right "We |ust wanted to put it to bed." said Gladchuk. "I had lunch with Alvin 10 days earlier and told him the change was coming After the UNCC loss. I called Alvin at the team hotel and told him that wr needed to put this to bed. and he agreed" The entire process moved rapidly Twelve hours after Gladchuk's conversation with Brooks, the press release went out saying that Brooks, only the fourth head coach in school history, would be gone after the season. Immediately the search for a replacement began. Coach Brooks' record at UH was one of the main reasons he was let go. Losing 20 games in one season was the worst single season losing mark at UH. breaking Brooks' record of 19 losses in 1993-94 and in 94-9S. Also dwindling attendance, awareness on campus, and lack of alumni support hurt his chances of coaching the team during the 1998-99 season. Brooks also never led the Coogs to the NCAA tournament, the measuring sock for success in college basketball. Brooks never lost the respect of his players or the media The day after the firing was made public, a swarm of media surrounded Brooks as he came onto the court for his last practice in Hofheinz Pavilhon. His players were upbeat and focused, and Brooks fielded all questions put to him by the media He was as happy as a guy without a job could be and he did not have any regrets regarding his style or his peifonnance Regarding bis firing. Brooks commented. "These thing, happen. You have to also look at it from their (the yj,e scene ^ Coach Brooks meets with the media on school's) point of view. The have to go on and recruit " the day after his firing was made public. He expressed sorrow that he was "not given the chance to finish what he started" Brooks Fired 181 |
