Transcript | the finer women DEMETRIA CANTU Living up to the group's motto, "Community Conscious, Action Oriented," the University of Houston chapter of Zeta Phi Beta was present at several volunteer events throughout the year. Members donated time and effort endlessly to help improve the surrounding community. The African-American sorority, also known as the Zetas had the opportunity to help the Stork's Nest Educational Program. Members gathered baby items such as diapers, baby food and toys for the underprivileged children in the Houston area. The sorority also helped SNEP find doctors who would donate their services and give free pre-natal and health education classes. "It's great when we get the chance to help those who can't help themselves," said junior business major Raisha Stevens. In addition to gathering baby necessities, ZPB also sponsored a fashion show and auctioned off numerous Valentine's baskets filled with surprises, with all proceeds donated to the SNEP program. Zeta Phi Beta also helped the Houston community throughout the year by helping increase awareness of diabetes, the importance of being an organ donor and asthma. With the help of the American Lung Association, Zeta members went to grade schools to support "Open Air Ways," an informative teaching session about asthma in which students were taught about early signs of asthma and its seriousness. ZPB also participated in the Adopt-A-Classroom project, in which sorority members traveled to elementary and middle schools to act as positive role models for the students. Students had the opportunity to ask Zetas questions about college and life after high school. "We try to explain to the kids that life can still be fun after they finish school. We want for each of them to make something out of themselves," said Stevens. The Zetas also participated in the "Donate a Hug" program. Boxes were distributed throughout the UH campus to give students a chance to donate their stuffed animals for children in shelters. More than 200 toys were collected.
