CHMIOLA UH students living on campus usually take home a few belongings over the winter break, but Quadrangle residents were required to pack up most all of their possessions because of room renovations. The work was mainly concentrated on shower reconstruction and wall resurfacing in the Quad's 409 rooms. Several residents expressed disgruntlement before the break at the need to remove items affixed to walls, move furniture to the middle of their room and place remaining possessions in their closets. "It's inconvenient. I've got a refrigerator, microwave, computer, big stereo ... and it's all got to go home," said Matthew Demarest, aTaub resident from Lake Charles, La. The sophomore history major added that he could not fit many of his possessions into his closet. Many residents complained to officials about the timing of the project. "My roommate and I were annoyed that they wanted us to do that at the end of the semester," said Sonia Gonzalez, a junior radio and television major living in Settegast. Campus residents are generally advised to take valuables home over the month- long break, according to UH Residential Life and Housing Executive Director Andy Blank. But to fix the walls and showers, it was necessary to move the furniture and remove belongings for workers to see what needed to be fixed. A Nov. 21 memo placed in Quad residents' mailboxes said the renovation project included "the covering and sealing of the existing tile walls, floors and ceilings in showers, as well as the installation of new shower vents." As for the rooms, the memo said renovations would involve "measures as simple as repainting a wall or as involved as having to remove existing plaster, resurface walls and repaint." When residents returned to their rooms in January for the spring semester, many were relieved to see the renovations had been completed and were satisfied with the rooms' new look. "There was a crack in the foundation that let water leak into the room through the entranceway," said freshman biology major CorkyYokum, aTaub resident. Needless to say, she was pleased to see her shower was repaired. "I'm just excited that they actually got it done," Yokum said. |
