Transcript students speak-up LISA CHMIOLA Daily Cougar Campus News Editor, Jim Parsons slowly rose from his seat to address the committee. At this point, the meeting had lasted for well past an hour. He grabbed a stack of papers and quickly flipped through them, claiming he had forgotten what he was going to say. He then proceeded to tell the audience of students, faculty, staff and community professionals what he planned to do with the newspaper if elected the editor in chief. Electing student editors for the Cougar and the Houstonian yearbook is one of the main functions of the University of Houston's Student Publications Committee, the 17-member governing body of the publications. The committee consists of students and staff from within the Student Publications department and from other parts of the university; and professionals from Houston's journalism community. Members gather once a month for progress reports from the publications, offer suggestions for problems and present concerns they might have on how the entities are run. This year, the committee formed two subcommittees: one to target the marketing of the publications to increase their prominence and to attract new staff members, the other to focus on the quality of the publications to improve their excellence. "Our goal is to market The Daily Cougar to students as a great place to work and to gain valuable work experience," said Loida Casares Ruiz, chairperson of the promotions subcommittee and advertising manager for the department. Excellence committee members worked on finding ways to take students' contributions and help improve the quality of the work they produce. "I think that any paper needs input from the outside," said Ingrid Allstrom, chairperson of excellence committee and Spring Daily Cougar editor. "The members of the committee come from the university, as well as from other publications. They offer criticism and comment that is meaningful because they all have an interest in what we print." This committee's members offer suggestions and ideas on problems the staffs deal with, something that Parsons said is the essence of the SPC as a whole. "The committee's input helps determine the direction of the department, and I look forward to working with it as editor in chief," Parsons added. "I think that any paper needs input from the outside," Ingrid Allstrom Student Publications Committee Chair and Vice-chair, Lisa Chmiola and Jim Parsons discuss candidates for the 1998-1999 Houstonian yearbook. Senior Advertising major Matt Rogers and Junior Journalism major Demetria Cantu were finally voted in as co-editors. Photo by Jade Mighell Student Publications Committee
