Transcript | by Andrew J. Ferraro Senior Susanne Anderson returns a serve in her second round C-USA match against Marquette. Photo by Pete Medrano This year's conference championship was the first ever for the Cougars. The Coogs look to be the first ever repeat conference champs in C-USA history next year. For the first time in the 21-year history of the women's tennis program at the University of Houston, the 1998 Cougars won a conference championship. After all those years competing in the now defunct Southwest Conference, the Cougars won their first Conference USA title in just their second year in the league and have proved to the players and coaches of the C-USA that they are not a force to be taken lightly. In only the first match of the season, an 8-1 win over Texas-San Antonio, sophomore Galina Seliounina went down with a broken wrist and the Cougars would have to play short-handed for the next five to six weeks. From then on it was up and down. The Cougars won two of their first three, but then lost five of their next seven giving them a 4-6 record after the first ten matches of the season. But then on March 14, Seliounina returned and was forced to play with just one hand with her left wrist was still taped from the injury. The Cougars then won three of four, all at home, on the UH Varsity Tennis Complex. The Cougars hosted the 1998 C-USA Tennis Tournament, and after losing to Marquette in the semifinal round last year, they were ready, and most of all healthy, for a rematch with the Golden Eagles. After winning the first match, a 5-2 victory over Southern Mississippi, the Cougars got their wish and were matched up with the C-USA No. 2 seed, Marquette. The Golden Eagles had already defeated the Cougars once this year and the pressure was on, not only to upset the Golden Eagles, but to win their first ever Conference Championship. After falling behind in the match 3-0 and 4-2, the Cougars rallied and won the match 5-2 and sent the stunned Marquette squad to the third-place game against South Florida, the No. 1 seed, who had been upset by the Cougars next opponent, the UAB Blazers. The Cougars went on to defeat UAB 5-2 and received their trophy in one proud moment that sent a message to all the teams in the conference. And that was to look out for Houston in 1999 as they'll likely be favorites to be the first repeat champions in C-USA history. Sophomore Sarah Bolle stares down a returned serve coming back at her .
