Photo by Pete Medrano The Lady Cougars appeared in their ninth straight post-season. With all but two players returning, the Coogs are a great bet in the fall of '98. by Andrew J. Ferraro This was certainly another year to remember for the 1997 Cougar Volleyball team. Capped by its second conference championship of the 1990s and its first in Conference USA, the Cougars season was one filled with intensity, effort, and victory. The Cougars finished the year with a 23-9 record after facing a gauntlet of foes and one of the toughest early-season schedules in the country. Of the nine losses, six were to teams that were consistently ranked in the Top 25 throughout the season. Although the losses were few and far between, it was the wins that brought a championship to Houston and placed the Cougars in their ninth straight post-season. After losing five of their first eight matches, the Cougars then rolled off five straight wins and nine of 10 before dropping a pair of hard-fought three game matches to Notre Dame and Saint Louis. But the Cougars rebounded from that slow stretch and used it as a springboard by winning seven in a row and 11 of their last 12 to put them on top of C-USA. The 1997 C-USA championship tournament was held at Hofheinz Pavilion and after losing last year's championship to the South Florida Bulls in Louisville, the team knew that this was their chance to shine. After taking the first match, 3-1 over the Memphis Tigers, the Cougars used the revenge factor as they swept the Saint Louis Billikens in three games to put them into the championship match against Cincinnati. The Bearcats were a very dangerous team that could explode at anytime via the hitting of two very potent seniors. tournament belonged to the Cougars and after splitting the first two games, the Cougars got tough, went to work and won a championship catapulting them into the Mountain bracket in the 1998 NCAA regional tournament that was held in Palo Alto, California. But the post-season came to an abrupt end when the Cougars fell to the Big XII conference's Oklahoma Sooners. For whatever reason, UH ran out of gas as the Sooners defeated the Cougars in three games ending their remarkable season. The Cougar spikers played their 25th season of volleyball during the 1997 season. Coach Walton's team was consistently in the national spotlight. Photo by Pete Medrano |
