Transcript | freeze frame DEMETRIA CANTU It takes all kinds. Throughout the year chemistry, economics, theater and business majors put together another year of the Student Video Network. SVN is a group with over 45 members focused on providing quality television shows to the student body. The work hit the air daily on Channel 6, the campus cable access station and was wildly popular with students who lived on campus. Each year, the SVN has an in-house awards ceremony called the "Sveenie" awards, modeled after the Emmys. Awards are given to the best individual in several different categories, from best actor and actress to best overall performance. "I can't believe I won. You have no idea how hard it is to do the weather and to be entertaining at the same time," said senior business major, Melissa Bartholomew, winner of the fall 1997 Sveenie Award for Best Guest Performer. SVN provides a variety of topics to the students through its programming. Throughout the year the group focused on health related issues, greek life, sports, weather, entertainment, as well as national and international news. "We don't get paid for what we do, we just do it for fun," said SVN President Joe Breda. The video network hopes to increase its current viewer ship from 3,000 to more than 6,000.The group produces and airs shows throughout the academic year, only taking a break during December. Some of its most popular shows include Cougar Country, Pirate TV, and Sports Junkies. "Sports Junkies is a lot of fun to do. We just kind of hang out and joke about the latest sports happenings," Breda said. Occasionally, special guests are invited to live broadcasts to promote a school event or present community information. "It's really a unique experience. It's your once-in-a-lifetime chance to be on TV, and most of all, it's your 15 minutes of fame," Breda said. your 15 minutes of fame," Breda said.
