Transcript | An Evening with the President Arthur Smith mola Sitting in a plush chair in the living room of the Wortham House, University of Houston System Chancellor/UH President Arthur Smith recalls his first impressions of UH. On one of Smith's first visits to UH in November 1996, he noticed he had his task cut out for him in his new job. "It was clear the campus exterior needed some work," Smith said of the visit. However, the highest priority on Smith's list for UH centers on students — enhancing the quality of the undergraduate experience, a project Smith quips is "something you never really complete." Despite the numerous challenges of the dual position, Smith enjoys being at the helm. "There is a kaleidoscope of challenges that come at you. You never know what each day will bring, other than it will surprise you," he says. Smith is experienced in dealing with the daily challenges - he served as University of Utah's president for five years and interim president at the University of The support ofhis wife, June also diHnV h,«* "t. opportunity to come to Houston * WaS *"* appealin§'" ^ ^ of the "We'd liite people to say of us that we made a difference while we were here, that we set a tone/* Arthur Smith Chancellor/till President as UH's first lady. ~"r «~JW ui me university," Arthur says of her role « Opening Continued on pg 4 |
