Transcript Baseball ignited a stretch where the Cougars won 13 of 14 to take a one-game lead over the floundering Green Wave. During the wee hours on May 15, while his team was asleep in Tampa, Florida, head coach Rayner Noble found out that UH had won the conference crown due to Tulane's loss to Southern Miss, a game that ended at 3 a.m. Heading into the Conference USA Tournament in Memphis, the Cougars were given another gift: the right to host the NCAA Regional at Houston. With a berth assured in the post-season tourney, the Cougars took second place in Memphis and were then given a No. 1 seed at their own regional, alongside Southwestern Louisiana, Texas and Southwest Texas. The Cougars fought valiantly throughout the regional, not only batting the three other schools but the weather as four of the six games were suspended due to lightning during the weekend. As the final game wrapped up shortly before midnight on Sunday, May 30, Houston had been shocked by upstart USL, who would meet Rice in the Super Regional in the Astrodome the following week. Even with the disappointment in the regional, 1999 was a stellar year for the Cougars. With several highly touted recruits headed to Houston in 2000, Rayner Noble and Co. look for next season to be even better. Junior J.P. Woodward prepares to slide into home against the Bearkats of Sam Houston. The OH team went on to win the game 11-2. Junior Shortstop Aaron Mele tags out a UAB runner as he steal 2nd base.
