Transcript | Women's Hoops Starting Over ^ I.UHAiJ HI i I IIP I I l 3 m n that After coming off one of the worst seasons in school history, the Lady Cougar basketball program underwent drastic change under the leadership of new head coach Joe Curl. The only problem, however, was Curl did not have the opportunity to bring in new " players, as he was hired less than a week before the Spring signing period. The results were predictable - a 5-22 record in 1999 ensued. The season started off with a bang for the Lady Cougars, who demolished Long Island 75-45 in Curl's inaugural game. Less than 24 hours after Clyde Drexler made his coaching debut by beating Texas, the Lady Cougars rolled by the Lady Longhorns 61-52 in Hofheinz Pavilion. But that's where the joyride ended. Those two wins were the only back-to-back victories for BY P. RYAN MONCEAUX the Coogs all season long. The Lady Cougars went to the St. John's Tournament in Queens, N.Y. and were slaughtered by Georgia Southern, 102-76. That first loss was indicative of how the rest of the season would go for Curl and his squad. After winning the first C-USA game of the year on New Year's Day against Southern Miss, Houston ended the season with 1 5 consecutive losses and the worst-ever record in Conference USA at 1-15. The low point came during the last three games of the year when UH was blown out by an average of 20 points a contest. "We just have to take this year and learn from it," Curl said after the season. "Looking back, we could have done some different things, but the record speaks for itself." Even though the season ended on a downward spiral, the future looks bright for Curl and the Lady Cougars with the signing of 3 JUCO Ail-Americans that will enable to Lady Cougars to compete as early as next year.
