Transcript | BILL MYERS Center W&M's Lex rips the UH line but runs into Purdum. DON WILLHELM End W and M EDGES INSPIRED COUGARS, 14-13 HOUSTON, Sept. 17—The Cougars, obviously awed by the 'big-time' William & Mary Indians in the first half, forgot their awe in the second half of their 1949 debut tonight, and finished strong, but were nipped 14-13 by the Virginia team. It was all Indians in the first half Buddy Lex, a young man who moves in rapid fashion from halfback, and Ed Weber, who emulates Lex, led the potent W&M ground attack. Highly-touted Jack Cloud rammed over two TD's but did little else to live up to his fancy reputation. The third quarter proved a near-stalemate, with the UH holding a defensive edge. The Big Red pushed the W&M team about the field in a most ungentle manner, but did not score. Two fourth-quarter scores for the UH, by Aubrey Baker and Jack Golden, respectively, put them very much back in the game. But Alan Neveux's second point-after try was blocked by Mike O'Pella and Cougar fans were left wishing that there could have been two sceond halves and no first halves. JACK GOLDEN Halfback Winfield carries as UH hits the comeback trail. TOM PETTY Tackle 300 BOB JINKS End |
