Transcript | The President Hoffman directs UH growth Dr. Philip G. Hoffman was named president of the University of Houston in September, 1961. Prior to coming to the University as vice president and dean of facilities and a professor of history in 1957, he was dean of faculty at Portland State College. Dr. Hoffman received his bachelor's degree at Pacific Union College and a master's at the University of Southern California. He served as a communications intelligence officer in the Navy during World War II. Following the war he obtained his Ph.D. degree in history from Ohio State University. Dr. Hoffman holds membership in the American Historical Association, the American Association of University professors, the Texas Philosophical Society and the Downtown Houston Rotary Club. He is also a member of the board of Kinkaid School, the Houston Symphony Society, Houston Research Institute, Inc., the Houston Museum of Natural History and the Houston Chamber of Commerce. He also serves with the National Commission on Accrediting and the Executive Council of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The President 287 |
