Transcript | BEARKATS CUT COUGAR WINNING STREAK With two scalps under their belts, the Cougars returned from Christmas holidays to take Brooke Army Medical Center, 53-49, in a hard-fought contest. Dick Berg led the scoring with 15 points as the Cats made it three wins in a row. In their last game before starting conference play, the Cougars gained revenge over the Shur-Start Battery company's quint in a rough-and-tumble contest. Again Hendrix took scoring honors with 16 points as the Cougar cagers rolled to a 66-51 victory. The dog-eat-dog Lone Star conference race started with the locals meeting their old rivals, the Sam Houston Bearkats, at Public School field house. It was the same old story. D. H. Watkins, speedy little Bearkat guard, teamed up with "old man jinx" to take the Cougars, 66-64, in overtime play. Marvin Reichle led Cougar scoring with 16 points as the Red and White team, hampered by the absence of Louis Brown, saw their string of victories cut short. Playing host to North Texas and East Texas, ike Cougars roared back into the thick of Lone Star competition. North Texas was the first conference foe to fall before the fast-breaking Cats. The Eagles from Denton were never able to get ahead as the Cougars, led by Berg with 21 points, trounced the visitors, 64-57. Two nights later, it was more of the same with East Texas taking it on the chin, 67-46. Again it was Berg with 18 tallies who led the Red and White to victory over the completely outclassed Lions from Commerce. ROUTING THE EAGLES of North Texas, Bill Mc- Phail climbs into the stratosphere to sink a two-pointer. The Red and White went on to win the tilt, 64-57. ANOTHER TALLY against the East Texas Lions is racked up by Marvin Reichle. The Cougars took an easy 67-46 victory over the visitors from Commerce. |
