Transcript | Sports pit students against themselves, nature in human struggle. Spectators identify, empathise with adopted teams. Sports offer both the participant and the observer a drama of physical ability over natural and human barriers. The intertwining arms of the basketball players epitomize raw struggle. A golfer tries to overcome natural obstacles to defeat fellow players. The physical effort and potential defeat embodied in sports are more than compensated by the tempting pleasures of victory and domination. For the observer the attraction lies in identifying with a team or individual and sharing triumphs and setbacks. 42 |
