Most students think UH has a big crime problem and with UHPD finding more guns on campus it only worsens the worry of students. Some students say they would bring a weapon if there was a real crime problem at UH, but the problem seems to be implied being that UH is located near Downtown. "I've never seen violence or lack of safety," said Junior Roberto Alvarez. "But if I felt a lack of security, and if I didn't see an increase in police protection, I might consider buying a weapon." Although the numbers aren't big, weapons have been found on campus. "If students bring a prohibited weapon such as a switchblade knife or firearms they are arrested for Places Weapons Prohibited," said Lt. Brad Wigtil. Carrying a gun on campus is a serious charge "There is no justification (for carrying weapons)," Wigtil said. which can carry heavy penalties. "It is a third-degree felony, which is a very serious charge," said Wigtil. "There is no justification (for carrying weapons)," Wigtil said. There are many different opinions on the subject of gun ownership "I feel that owning a hand gun is ok as long as that person has taken a course in using it correctly and that the person has passed the waiting period. Even know I feel there is a need for stricter gun control than what the Brady Bill has required," Business Major Sophomore Dan Lam said. 111 disagree with gun ownershipbecause of the rising violence not just in urban areas but also in rural areas. Everyone seems to be overly paranoid," Architect Major Sophomore Mike Tran said. - JoAnn Stephens Security I Gun Control 63) 67 |
