THE COUGAR
Students in journalism—and other volunteers—told the running story of the
University's 25th year through the pages of the Cougar, on the press donated
by R. E. Smith. Tragedy, comedy—not always intended—the significant, the
moment's talk of the campus—all found their way into a paper perenially rated
First Class and aspiring for even better coverage and better writing.
Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Cullen had their day on the campus in September, and
the Cougar dedicated its most important issue to these friends of the campus
and of the student publication. Big gifts were told—the gift of some $26,000
to the agriculture department, for example. Tragedy also was reported—the
death of Leon Gryder, for instance, until now as great a mystery as ever. Football triumphs and losses, the long winning streak of the great tennis team,
an all-out campaign for blood, dramatics and musical and speech events—and,
yes, even journalism and publications activities. Varsity Varieties, and again
the'Greatest College Show on Earth—Frontier Fiesta—all were in the Cougar,
as were numerous letters to the editors, columns good and bad, editorials wise
and foolish, student government and failures. In short, the equivalent of a
medium-size novel each month, composed and edited by students, the 1951-52
Cougar wrote the story into the records of another great University of Houston
year.
