Transcript | THE 1952 HOUSTONIAN'S U. of H. Football Player of the Year GENE SHANNON "On and off the field, the greatest football player ever to don a University of Houston uniform"—that evaluation of this year's Outstanding Football Player seems to be generally accepted by fans and followers of University sports history. The record substantiates the praise: For example, in the Salad Bowl game on New Year's Day, Shannon made all four Cougar touchdowns, was the leading ground-gainer on the field, and was unanimously named Outstanding Player of the game. Shannon led the nation in yards carried per try—an average of 7.3. He earned fourth place in the nation in total yardage, with 1059 yards on 144 times he carried the ball. Fans agree that the only reason he didn't lead in this department was that he didn't have the ball enough times. Against five opponents through the season, Shannon's yardage exceeded that of the entire enemy team. He was the leading runner on the field against Baylor, Texas Tech, Detroit, Villanova, Wichita, Louisville, and Oklahoma A&M. Honorable Mention on the A.P. Ail-American and selection to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team rounded out the honors of this speedy and elusive little halfback. The only headache Shannon ever brought to his coaches is the one of trying to find a replacement. 67 |
