Transcript | ZANE GREGORY Tackle JACKIE GOLDEN Back VICTOR HAMPEL End BUDDY GILLIOZ Tackle Hardin-Simmons . . .27 Houston 35 Hardin-Simmons, from the Texas Plainlands, met and fell to a bruising Cougar assault, 35-27 at Rice Stadium. The hard-bitten Cowpokes matched the Cougars touchdown for touchdown until the final period, when Houston pulled ahead for keeps. Two fourth-period touchdowns gave Houston its first victory over the touted Cowboys. With impressive victories over Army, Penn State and Alabama, Villanova challenged the Cougars next in Rice Stadium. Only a weak pass defense prevented the Red Suits from undoing Villanova's national ranking. Sparked by Gene Shannon, the Cougars worked doggedly for each touchdown, while the Easterners counted with ease via the air route. Shannon was superb. He ran for three touchdowns off twenty-six carries for 158 yards, 24 more than Villanova's entire ground output. Shannon did this despite a third-period leg injury. Final Score: 33-27, Villanova. Villanova 33 Houston 27 You're right. That's Gene Shannon going against Hardin-Simmons. His record for the night was 81 yards for 8 carries, and he received a pass for 33 more yards.
