Transcript | SOVIET UNION 19 destroyed and human beings murdered by the Whites, the memory of all that horror will never disappear from the minds of the working masses of our Union. When we look back upon those years we know that the working class and the peasantry regard the Soviet Government as their government. They have fought for it, they shed their blood for it and finally achieved it. After the civil war ended and the struggle began, the struggle for a new social order, the building up of a new life; and with the same enthusiasm which the workers and peasants devoted to fighting, they now carried out the work of construction. It has not been possible to achieve all that we desired in one blow. The demands of the October revolution could only be fulfilled step by step; but we have witnessed the heroism of the workers and peasants in face of the hunger and suffering they bore in order to lay the foundations of the new society, new relations between man and man. i In the first days after the October revolution, comrade Lenin once said that organisation is the keynote of socialism; the workers and peasants must organise in every direction according to the manifold tasks confronting them. In the ten years' existence of the Soviet Union we have seen the development of persistent organisational work. We have the Party and trade union organisations, we see how the masses of the rural population rally round the village Soviets. There lies the source of our strength. |
