Transcript ment, demonstrate, on the one hand, that Spain persists in her system of evading, by unsupported promises and flimsy pretexts, the fulfilment of her obligations, and on the other, that the English Government, always considerate and indulgent with the weak, has exhausted the most exemplary patience in its just, but fruitless protests. To persevere in this line of conduct after more than fifty years of waiting and temporizing, is compatible neither with the dignity of the great British nation nor with the duties which before God and man it has pledged itself to perform in the important question of African slavery. The writer believes he is justified in asseverating that were the energetic attitude which the circumstances call for taken by the British Government, it would deserve and receive the sympathy and applause of all free and Christian peoples, without excepting even the more intelligent and worthy portion of the Spaniards themselves, who, as will be seen in the following pages, condemn slavery and execrate its upholders. i JUAN MANUEL MACIAS. 127, Strand, London, December 1st, 1872. /
