Item Description
Title La Commune No. 26: Longuet
Alternative Title The Commune: Longuet
Creator (LCNAF)
  • Klenck, Paul
Description This is a political caricature related to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 or the Paris Commune of 1871. No. 26. Within illus.: Café de la Renaissance.
Caption Caption: English translation: "Member of the Commune. Longuet is the type of student immortalized by the pen of Gavarni or even better, by Colline of La Bohème. Of each cafe in the Latin Quarter he made a platform. Here, a beer in hand, his great pipe in the other and half hidden past great clouds of smoke, he made the ladies at the bar tremble as he vociferously developed his socialist theories that he wanted, he said, to put into practice immediately. In 1867, he started writing for Jules Vallès newspaper, La Rue. Under the Commune, he was given the direction of the Journal Officiel where he was soon replaced by Vésinier. He is now in London and it was there that he married the daughter of Karl Marx."
