  • Klenck, Paul
Description This is a political caricature related to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 or the Paris Commune of 1871. No. 59; Within illus.: Le Salut Public
Caption Caption: English translation: "Gustave Maroteau was a young man who started in journalism in 1869, with small republican pamphlets that he published for a penny. In those pages he undertook an energetic and formidable campaign against the Empire and was paid for his audacity with the greatest success. Later, the days after March 18, 1871, he founded La Montagne, and then Le Salut Public where especially extreme and violent articles against the higher clergy earned him an unprecedented condemnation in the annals of our civil discord: The Death Penalty for a Press Crime. History and posterity will will come to know the talent of this virile young mountaineer, grandson of the Grandmother of our Revolutions."
