Transcript | Friday Evening Willis Oct 25th./78 My Dear Son I have just learned that a United States Marshal Together with Mr Dunn and a possy [sic] have just left Willis for Mont -gomery to arrest parties there &c &c God only knows what will be the result I feel well assured that if Dunn can get Gaston into dangers way he will do it I heard too that a great many of the Citi- -zens of this place had been summoned by this U S Marshal as witnesses to appear at Galveston. so far as I have heard all are playing know nothing. We have not seen Gaston since last Thursday week, he is going over the County again. See Mr Ashe and let him know what is going on in this County. I wish he was here today - for realy I do feel very sad at the prospect ahead. God help us is my prayer --------------------------------------------------- I had just written you a note when on my own matters when I heard of these officers going over to Montgomery. I hope I am not a natural born Coward. But my blood ceased to cer- culate for a time after hearing of the demonstration that is to be made today at Montgomery again I pray Gods aid for our dear ones Affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones As I have tried to say in the enclosed note I have no & will not make any definite arrangement for winter quarters until I see or hear fully from you MJ. [Second letter enclosed with same date but no year] Willis Oct 25th Dear Son I have found a very nice well furnished comfortable house to rent down in Montgomery St it is the fifth house from Judge Lewiss place coming this way, that is toward the Rail Road I went into it, and found it nice and comfortable, two rooms are Papered, it has two nice brick Chimneys, well of good water Kitchen &c all under the same roof. Mr. Jaycopes has the renting of it as it belongs to a little Boy for whom he is Guardian I have mere ly mentioned this to you as I will be obliged to make some change very soon. And know of no place that would suit me better for a place to pass the winter, as it is joined all round by good people ----------------------------------------------- that is, it is in a good neighborhood Mr. Jaycope told me this morning that so soon as the County Court took action upon the estate of of which he was appointed executor & guar dian of the child & his interests that he would be able to give me an answer provided I wanted the place. Montgomery Co. Court meets next Monday week. But he appeared unwilling to rent for a few months, as the place has an Acre of ground inclosed with a good picket fence. And he appeared to think it would rent readily by the year, his price is ($10.) ten dollars pr. month, which I think is very high. But I will talk the matter over with you have not said or done anything definite or binding, Tho Mr Jaycope told me to go there at anytime if I wished to do so. x Affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones x I wish to see you first |
