Description Photograph of architectural drawing, Houston College for Negroes. The Houston College for Negroes was initially established in 1935 and functioned at a temporary location at Jack Yates High School for eleven years. The campus was moved to its permanent location southeast of downtown in 1946. The 53 acres of land were donated by Hugh Roy Cullen. The college changed its name to Texas Southern University in 1951.
