The United States Senate has passed a bill providing for the payment of $ 15,000 to Mrs. Claude P. Gresham, widow of Lt. Comdr. William F. Gresham, U. S. N., and to another person who who collaborated in the development of a new invention which will practically assure the transmission of communications in time of war without fear of the code beng deciphered. In order to prevent the invention being patented, the Government confiscated it immediately so as to have exclusive control thereof for national defense purposes. This action denied Commander Gresham his right to have his invention used by other than the United States. The early days were trying times for seamen, days of coal and ashes, fire doors, slice bars, and swinging bags from the holds of colliers. " But how different today the modern navy is, oil instead of coal, electrical driven ships with all modern electric equipment, and many other changes that brings much comfort to the youth who sail the seas in our navy. 000 000 There was a time, some 75 or a hundred years ago, when the expression used by a man- o'- warsman, ( 48 or 72) would have meant a ship of that number of guns. Today the terms apply to liberty or leave periods. A " 48" is a two day liberty, a " 72" a three day leave. As far back as 1850, a certain Dr. Lardner predicted the use of artillery projectiles filled with chemicals which would produce clouds of " arsenic and prussic acid gasses." He pointed out the great volume of gas which could be secured from chemicals in a solid or liquid state. Dr. Lardner disignated the chemical compounds suitable for 10beling into artillery shells by the beneral name " Kakodyles." 000 • • • • ( From Pall'e 1.) A Pack Of Playing Cards thought it highly improper to play cards, even for fun. Perhaps the following interesting story of a man who once compared a deck of cards to the Bible could be used as an effective argument against those who have scruples against playing cards. Richard Land, a private in the 42d Foot Troops of the " Black Watch" of the British Army early in the 18th century, was brought before the mayor and lord protector of Glasgow, charged with playing cards during divine service. He said he had no Bible or Prayer Book and was using the pack of cards instead. When asked to explain what he meant he answered: " When I see the ace, it reminds me of the one God; the Duce recalls the Father and the Son; the trey, the three persons of the Trinity: the four spot reminds me of tne four Evangelists; the five, the five wise Virgins; the six, of the days of Creation; the seven, of the seventh day of Sabbath; the eight recalls the righteous persons in the Ark; the nine, the ungrateful lepers; the ten, the Commandants; the King suggests the King of Heaven; the Queen, the Queen of Sheba who sought Wisdom from Solomon; the knave ( jack)- here he hesitated, but being urged, went on: " The knave stands for the constable who arrested me." The lord protector of Glasgow interrupted to remark that the constable seemed to have been a fool, even though not a knave. Then the soldier continued, " There are 365 pips ( spots) in the pack, which recall the days of the year; 52 cards, pne for each week; 12 face cards one for each month; and the 13 tricks represent the number of weeks in a quarter. Thus the pack of cards serves as a Bible, a Prayer Book and an almanac. A few sailors were seated on the front row during the circus performance when a charming lady lion- tamer beckoned to a savage- looking lion to take a piece of sugar from her mouth. " Why, I could do that trick, exclaimed one of the sailors. " Oh," replied the fair one, " could you really?" " You bet," said the sailor, " just as easily as the lion."
