HOUSTON TO SPEND A WEEK
AT ANCHOR
--::--
This coming week the Houston will
remain moored in berth " G" Long
Beach. The period will be devoted to
upkeep and Damage Control Drills
preparing for the forthcoming Damage
Control Practice which will be
held shortly after our visit to San
Francisco.
All hands are urged to use the utmost
care and thoroughness in the
setti. ng of Condition " Bak, er" and
" Affirm" during these drills. The seting
of these two conditions of readiness
have a very large factor in the
total merit of the practice. Therefore,
upon the thoroughness with which
these two phases of the practice are
conducted depends to a large extent
our final score. The Houston has an
excellent Damage Control organization
and each and everyone of us
conscientiously does his part there
is no reason why the ship can't make
a very creditable mark.
Monday, 2 November, the ship will
get underway for Mare Island where
she will remain until 9 November.
On Monday, the 9th, she will go from
Mare Island to San Francisco where
she will anchor in berth No. 8.

NEW MEXICO WINS VANDERBILT
TROPHY
--::--
Thursday afternoon at Trona Field,
the crack New Mexico Marine platoon
won the coveted Vanderbilt Trophy
from last year's titleholders, the U.
S. S. California. Six squad platoons
from ten battleships competed for the
cup. Each of the platoons drilled before
the judges for six minute periods.
The Vanderbilt Cup was presented
to the Navy in 1934 by William H.
Vanderbilt, for annual award to the
best- drilled marine detachment.
Preceeding the drill competition,
all platoons were combined as a single
batallion and accompanied by the
massed bands of the Maryland, Idaho
and New York, they were reviewed by
Vice- Admiral Clarence S. Kempff who
later presented the Cup to the winning
team. .. ..
" PERSONAL APPEARANCE"
( Continued from last week)
--::--
The hilarious three act comedy
" Personal Appearance" which is to
be played at the Savoy Theatre on
the 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st of Oct.
is now being filmed at Paramount
under the title " Go West Young Man".
Do not think the title means for the
younger generation to follow Horace
Greely's advice and seek fortune in
the West - for in this case the title
is meant to convey the idea that they
fall in love with Mae West, the star
of the film version.
In the play at the Savoy Theatre,
Isobel White plays the same role, that
of Carole Arden, and, after seeing
this finished actress you will never
