Transcript 24 HOUSTON VOICE/AUGUST 23, 1996 by Jon Anthony Legendary comedian Carol Burnett has been signed to portray Helen Hunt's mother on NBC's powerhouse sitcom Mad About You. Emmy Winner Burnett, fresh from her highly- successful Broadway stint in Moon Over Buffalo, will be joining the cast in September.... ^ Sheryl Crow's new album, self-titled, hits record stores Sept. 24. The album's first single. If it Makes You Happy, to be released Sept 3. is already in heavy rotation on radio stations across the country. The album also features the song Everyday is a Winding Road from the box-office hit Phenomenon and Redemption Day which she wrote during her trip visiting U.S. troops in Bosnia.... Melissa Etheridge and her lover will soon be moms. Etheridge and her life partner. Julie Cypher, announced this week that they are expecting a child The couple who have been together for eight years have been planning to have a child for some time. They have not commented on how Cypher became pregnant. Cypher was once married to Lou Diamond Phillips of La Bamba fame, currently starring to rave reviews as the King of Siam in The King and I.... Despite Robert Urich's excellent prognosis for his battle with cancer. Turner Program Services has canceled his syndicated drama. Lazarus Man There was explanation for the cancellation.... Linda Balgord has been tapped to portray Norma Desmond in the touring production of Sunset Boulevard slated to hit Houston next year from July 18 - August 16 at Jones Hall. Balgord is an accomplished stage veteran, however, she is not a box-office attraction and the verdict is out on whether or not the show will be success without a headliner above thc title. Amy Carter is getting married in September to a computer consultant. James Wentzel. Carter is the only daughter of former President Jimmy Carter and Roslyn Carter.... Singer Mel Torme. aka as "The Velvet Fog", suffered a stroke last Tuesday. His prognosis is undetermined at press time.... Two men have been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of Diana Ross' brother and his wife last June. The couple had been tied with rope and wires and were found with plastic bags around their necks causing them to suffocate. In a related matter. ABC will re- broadcast Ross' compelling and critically acclaimed portrayal of a schizophrenic in Out of Darkness. The movie airs Sunday August 25 at 8pm... Tom Cruise got a retraction from a German magazine concerning his purported sterility. Ihe actor dropped his suit as a result. Thc retraction along with an apology will appear on the cover of thc Bunte magazine on the Aug. 17 issue.... Fox photographer Brad Neu thought an earthquake had struck when the portable John he was using in San Diego outside the convention center shook with a bang. That is until (he shaking stopped and Neu heard someone say. "Oh my God. I'm so sorry." A staffer in a golf cart used to transport people had accidentally run into the John... Taking inflation into account. Gone Wuh The Wind, is still the box-office champ of all time. According to tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Company and astounding 197.5 million people have seen the 1939 classic on the big-screen Richard Gere and Bruce Willis have signed to appear in a remake of the 1973 thriller The Day of the Jackal. While the original's premise concerned the plotted assassination of Charles De Gaulle, the updated version will surround a plot to kill the first lady Larry King will have a cameo as himself Unabomber: The True Story premieres on the USA network Sept. II. Robert Hays and Dean Stockwell star in the production.... Even posthumously. John Wayne proves he has the muscle to sell. Sales have risen 11% since "The Duke's" advertisements for Coors beer began airing. All proceeds go to the John Wayne Cancer institute. Wayne died of cancer... U.S. Air Force Capt. Scott O'Grady who survived being shot down in Bosnia will be judging the Miss America Pageant. Sept. 14 in Atlantic City... B.B. King. Bonnie Raitt. Eric Clapton. Robert Cray. Dr. John and Art Neville pay homage to music legend Stevie Ray Vaughan who died in a helicopter crash in 1990 A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn is currently available at record stores and a video of the recordings are slated to air on PBS Aug. 25 and VIM Aug. 26.... Joan Rivers will join the ranks of Cindy Crawford. Elle MacPherson and Jane Fonda River's plans to release a workout video this fall. Should be interesting. if anything... Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers reunite as the Harts in the upcoming Family Channel movie Hart to Hart: Till Death Do Vs Hart. George Hamilton co- stars. Hart airs August 25 at 6pm.... Rob Morrow (Northern, Exposure's resident doctor) is thc odds on favorite to portray Darrin in the big- screen adaptation of Bewitched. Alicia Silverstone appears set to portray Samantha. Other heavy weight contenders; Peter Gallagher as Uncle Arthur and Carol Channing and Joan Collins arc in Ihe running to portray Endora.... David Brinkley announced he would be leaving his post as host of This Week with David Brinkley, a weekly public affairs program. Brinkley will slay on during the elections and retire thereafter. Ookie Roberts and Sam □ Donaldson are being heavily considered as replacements. Also in the running: Ted Koppel and Diane Sawyer.
