It seems that many gay people are not open to hear anything that has to do with God? Is it because they are gay, or just because they are not interested in anything religh A: One of the most difficult things for any gay person to do is to work through the issue of being gay and being okay. The reason for this is that many negative, condemning messages have been given to them through the church and society. For people who come from a relig- Rev Janet Parker *ous background, or a Christian home, this may present many struggles in the form of self-acceptance, self-esteem and self-worth. Most people in general will struggle with getting a good self-image. For a gay person, this is sometimes magnified because of the pressure from the church and society. When you begin to share your faith with another gay person . try and be sensitive to why they might be resistant. There could be many factors. It may have nothing to do with God, but only with accepting themselves. It is very hard to receive love from someone when you don't love yourself. When people think about God. they may think that they must be worthy to receive God's love. If a person is battling feeling unworthy, they will clam up and be defensive. What you must realize is that this reaction is not about you. but about the struggles they are facing inside themselves. It is important for a gay Christian to remember any struggles they went through to get to the place where they felt okay and had a peace inside — about being gay. and about just being okay as a human being. Every person must come to the place of feeling that they are worthy of being loved. Most of us fall on either side of the spectrum. Some of us feel such low self-esteem and worthless. Others on the other side of the spectrum are full of pride, are over confident, and are self-sufficient without a need for God. The balance is to be somewhere in between. Human beings were created to worship something. God intended for us to worship God, our Creator. If people resist what you have to say about God, they are probably worshipping something or someone else. There are many, many different things in this world that will lure you into worshipping it. People caught in the area of self- sufficiency, w see no need for God. They have become their god. Those who be- ieve they are not worthy of God's love, get hooked on doing good deeds and being works" focused. Performance becomes their god. Let me encourage you not to stop sharing your faith. What you may want to do is begin meeting a person where they are, and find out what their journey of faith has been like. Walk with them for a while and see what their needs are. God will show you how to share what God has done for you. It should be a natural process. Evangelism is about being a friend to one another.
