Transcript 20 HOUSTONVOICE/ JUNE21, 1996 by Jon Anthony Happy Lesbian & Gay Pride Week Houston! Steve Martin has been tapped to replace John Travolta as the lead in the upcoming film The Double. Travolta was sued last week for walking off of the set. on location in Paris. Last week we reported that Travolta's camp denied their was contention on the set and that the reason for Travolta's departure was to comfort his son during surgery. Apparently Travolta and Double director Roman Polanski had creative differences related lo the filming of the movie, resulting in the ensuing litigation. Travolta is scheduled to appear on CBS' Late Show w/ David Lettermen next Friday. June 21.... Whoopi Goldberg as a male action hero tin drag? According to scriplwritcr Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct. Showgirls) that is precisely who would be cast if his latest Script, An Alan Smithee Film, is picked up for distribution. Eszterhas claims that Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis have also agreed to cameos in what he bills as a "faux documentary" spoof of movie making. Smithee is the pseudonym sanctioned by the Directors Guild for directors who would prefer their names not be associated with a particular film for various reasons. The movie purportedly melds fictitious Hollywood characters with real ones... Rosie O'Donnell's new daytime variety show debuted to impressive ratings last week O'Donnell's show garnered the highest- first day ratings for any talk show since 1990... Rita Moreno had to fill in for an ailing Sharon Stone at the Salute to the Ladies of the American Musical luncheon at the Beverly Hills hotel last week. Stone's spokeswoman said the actress was suffering from the flu and has had to cancel several engagements... Veteran television actor Mark Harmon has joined the cast of CBS' Monday night staple Chicago Hope. Harmon's previous credits include St Elsewhere playing a doctor with AIDS. Reasonable Doubts with Marlee Martin and last season's short lived crime- drama Charlie Grace.... Composer Guy Thomas has filed a $5 million copyright infringement lawsuit against Country and Western giant Garth Brooks Thomas contends that Brook's song Standing Outside the Fire is based on a song he co-wrote with Kenny Loggins titled Conviction of the Heart. An L.A. judge ordered Brooks to provide Thomas with the recording tracks of Fire. Brooks will resume his deposition next month.... Barbara Streisand chatted politics wilh President Clinton in his hotel suite for 45 minutes last week at the Sheraton Miramar in Santa Monica, CA. after attending two Democratic fund-raisers... Besieged by fan mail and pleas from police, civic leaders and Congressional members. Fox has given America's Most Wanted & temporary reprieve. Jane Pauley will anchor Time A Again, an upcoming show based on archived NBC News footage, for the new cable channel MSNBC - ajoint venture between Microsoft and NBC - slated to premiere next month... HBO Independent Productions will tum the WWW cyberthriller" Techno 3 into a television series. This marks the first time an original Web content moved to television.... Betty Buckley's recent appearance at Carnegie Hall in a benefit performance for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was an enormous success. Buckley won praise from critics and audiences alike. The charismatic performer was so dazzling that a live recording of ihis spectacular event will hit stores this fall. Buckley is contemplating taking her show on the road... Veteran Broadway producer David Merrick, upset with the nominating process conducted by the Tony Awards, will stage his own Awards ceremony next spring as an alternative to thc Tonys. The New Republic has a new editor to replace Andrew Sullivan, who left in April and subsequently disclosed his HIV status. Michael Kelly, 39. formerly a writer for The New Yorker will lake the helm of the weekly political journal. Kelly gained national prominence wilh the magazine as its gulf war reporter several years ago.... Columbia Records is planning to release a retrospective of recordings by the late jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. The highly anticipated boxed set hits ihe streets August 27.... A&E will adapt Jane Austen's Emma into a telepic for the fall of 1997. The cable network had considerable success last season wilh Austen's Pride and Prejudice.... Valerie Harper, fresh from her slint in the Woody Allen play Death Defying Acts, is in rehearsals for The Dragon and the Peart. The play based on the life of Pearl S. Buck requires the legendary actress/comedian to play 11 characters. Buck was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature for "The , Good Earth". The' show will tour the country prior to its Broadway debut. Chaka Kahn visi and performs on Rosie O'Donnell Monday June 24 at 9 am on Channel 13... Cher will spar with David Let term an Thursday June 27 on CBS' Late Show. The last several times these two got together, they made headlines. This get together promises to be interesting indeed.... Finally, Country legend George Jones will be signing copies of his autobiography. / Lived to Tell It All, from 6-8 pm at the Waldenbooks in West Oaks Mall.... Milestones: Jo Van Fleet, an Acadamy Award winning actress for her portrayal as James Dean's mother in East of Eden, died at the age of 81 last week. Fleet was the stepmother in thc 1965 version of Cinderella. Sazz. great Ella Fitzgerald passed away this past week as well. Fitzgerald was unsurpassed in her field of contemporary artists. Her vocal abilities and mesmerizing knowledge of thc musical scales was breathtaking. Fitzgerald was hailed as one of the greatest singers of the modern era and she was arguably the most respected diva in her class. She will be sorely missed, but her legacy will remain with us for generations to come.... Top of the Charts: As expected. Jim Carrey's Cable Guy opened #1 al the box office with a tally of $20 million. The Rock was a close second at $18.5 million. Mission: Impossible. Twister and Dragonhead round out the top five. ABC's Home Improvement topped the Nielsens Ratings last week. Tha Crossroads by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony remain at thc top of the singles charts and Metallica's new release Load tops the album charts according to Billboard. The New York Times best-seller's list indicates that John Grisham's novel The Runaway Jury is still king of the fiction charts and Dennis Rodman is at the top of his game on the non-fiction charts with his phenomenal bestsclling autobiographical lomc Bad As I Wanna Be.
