Transcript by Lee Davis Body Positive Volunteers Body Positive Wellness Center is searching for volunteers. People are living longer with HIV now because of concerns of taking care of themselves, getting stronger, building and replenishing lost lean body mass and getting ba.ck to or starting a well- ness/fitness program lhat could be overwhelming or a luxury. That is why Body Positive-Houston, a non-profit agency serving the HlV-t- community for the past 12 years, is creating a "one-stop" center where an HIV+ person can obtain free or subsidized supervised weight training sessions, massage therapy, nutritional counseling and assessment, peer counseling, information on HIV therapies via seminars and a library, and purchase nutritional products at wholesale costs. The center will be funded by an aggressive corporate and private donation campaign. Body Positive is now looking for volunteer personal trainers, massage therapists, nutritionists and any other therapist who would be interested in helping this important project. These volunteers will be compensated in a later phase after the program has been optimized. For more info, call Nelson Vergel at 713.5295303 or e-mail pow- ertx@aol.com. Couch or Ouch PotatoesP Couch potatoes may trade the couch for "ouch" if they pursue an exercise program too aggressively. "It's not uncommon at this time of year for patients to complain of chest-wall pain near the rib cage," said Dr. Wayne Riley, a General Internist and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. If chest-wal] pains do persist, rest at least a week before exercising again to allow time for the muscle to recover. "When you resume exercising, start at a lower level of intensity and pace yourself lo avoid re-injuring the muscle," Riley said. His recommendations included 1) instead of doing 50 abdominal crunches at the start, begin with 10 and increase the number by five each day until you reach your goal; 2) Start weight- lifting routines with a moderate load and perform repetitions several times a week Increase the volume by five to 10 perceni as you become comfortable with the weight load; and 3) Limit tennis, basketball and other sports lhat require strenuous shoulder- arm movements to an hour of play the first few times, and build up to more strenuous workouts. Seaweed or Chlorella? What's green, packed with nutrients, and commonly found in Japanese households? If you're thinking seaweed you're close. It's chlorella, a single cell fresh water algae. Chlorella has been available in the US since 1977, but has remained virtually unknown to many health enthusiasts. Chlorella's combination of nutrients reads like a "who's who" list of nutrition. It contains 19 amino acids, over 22 vitamins, minerals and trace elements as well as the-highest content of chlorophyll of any known food. Chlorella has been reported to strengthen the immune system, prevent cancer and detoxify the body. 30+ WUNJO "Beyond Vitamins" Does your immune system need a boost? Need help with weight control?
