HAIR LOSS: New
Developments
Peter H. Proctor, PhD, MD
Balding eventually affects most men and many women
Balding begins when male hormones cause your folhclu to

with hair growth. Agents which block the local action of male
hormones often stimulate hair growth, as does the immune
suppressing drug cyclosporin. L1kew1se. calcium and
compounds called "'free radicals" seem to figure
Recently, the FDA approved the topical agent minoxidil or
Rogame to treat hair loss. Drugs often work by m1m1cking
natural body chemicals. On the basis of s1m1lar chemical
structure and act1v1ty. a chemical called EDRF is probably your
body's ""natural m1no1t1dil'.' Not surprisingly, agents which
increase EDRF levels sumulate hair growth
Are you a candidate for medical treatment of hair loss1 Using
combined treatment. wt> can generally stop progression of
balding. thicken what you have. and replace at leaSl some of

For the Montrose Voice
Aries
Good conversation and exciting friends draw you
on, but a nagging sense of neglecting your responsibilities
causes some guilt. If the intellectual rewards
are great enough, you may be able to justify extra
leisure time. If not, there could be problems.
Taurus
Some profound new insights could lead you into an
area of experimentation that may surprise you.
You're freeing yourself for new ways of seeing
things, and in the process you may create some novel
creation or a unique relationship. It should be exciting!
Gemini
It's time to come out of your seclusion, whether that
has been mental, or an actual hermit-like existence
you've been living. When an invitation arrives, accept
it. Your presence will generate change for
someone else, much to your advantage.
LCancer
'Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious
ummer:' and you're due for that breakthrough
you've been worried about. Your illumination comes
slowly, but dawns clear within a few days. You'll be
feeling so much easier about yourself.
Leo
Expecting visitors or not, they'll show up and unwittingly
raise questions about your lifestyle. Your first
reaction may be self-doubt, but a little thought will
put that into proper perspective. Any adiustment
will be slight, but any you do works wonders.
Virgo
Since you're still concerned with the paths you've
chosen in the past, don't confuse matters with new
decisions right away. Stick close to home and take
any choice with a box of salt. No one knows you better
than you do, and your choices should be personal
ones.
Libra
You're feeling that a rearrangement of your priorities
is in order; a kind of mental housekeeping. Take
a cue from what you saw parents do; remember
their mistakes and their wisdom. No need for major
primal scenes though. Keep it light.
Scorpio
People can be stubborn, can't they? You're in for
some opposition at home which slows you down and
frustrates you. The key is in convincing others of a

need for change, and the contrast between present l reality and future possibility can do that.
Sagittarius
Allowing yourself to get bogged down with some minor
concerns is a poor idea. Your present worries
about money, career, and how you are handling
them should be balanced with the security you've established
for the future.
Capricorn
Where does all the money go? That's on easy one to
answer when you see what you've been spending on
others. This is a time to stort on a new way of budgeting,
both financial and emotional. Give what you
can, but consider your own needs.
Aquarius
Holiday blahs still got you down? Try a change of faces.
Look for some friends who are iust that and nothing
more. Let romance take a back seat to an exchange
of ideas. It's your mind that needs exercise
more than your body.
Pisces
Some questions of identity stir up your creative

feminine elements will afford some genuine in-sights.

For more years than any of us care to remember
the gay community has been fighting indifferent
and often hostile public officials, from the benign
neglect of the Reagan years, the closet-cased
paranoia of New York's Koch to the blatant
prejudice within the Texas Legislature.
Now the enemy is attacking on a new front. First
came Michael Fumento's "Myth of Heterosexual
AIDS" which basically blames the gay community
with creating straight panic over AIDS to achieve
political and social goals.
An article in the week's TIME by Dick Thompson
embellishes this theory (and quotes, among others,
Fumento) to hold the gay AIDS movement
responsible for a wide range of ills. Parenthetically
the story is illustrated with a baby dying of AIDS.
Beginning with a report that the Center for
Disease Control is about to release a report which
lowers their estimate of those infected, Thompson
turns to such authoritative sources as Fumento,
Joel Hay of the conservative Hoover Institution,
"many people;' "scientists;' and an assortment of
"experts?'
Thompson notes "many research scientists and
health policy analysts question whether the
changes wrought by AIDS activists harm basic
research, the public health and perhaps even
those who are at risk of acquiring the virus?' Truly a
damning indictment.
The old chestnut that AIDS kills less than cancer
and heart disease is resurrected to challenge the
"large" sums now spent on AIDS-so easy to
overlook the fact that cancer and heart disease,
both long-term health battles, do not threaten a
worldwide plague. (Confined primarily to
homosexuals and W drug users this is an easily
overlooked fact by those predisposed toward the
demise of both groups.)
Thompson barely concedes that Reagan may
have been slow in AIDS aid (is water wet?), but
then focuses on the "robust" $1 .6 billion in the
current budget. And where does much of that
money go? Certainly not to those gay AIDS
advocates he sees everywhere.
I~ r-::l-SHEER INSANITY &
~ DAOUIRI FACTORY
WESTHEIMER
He then faults the gay community for
emphasizing "the rapid development of treatments
for AIDS victims" and ignoring "the most effective
means of controlling a contagious epidemic
through prevention?' Why, oh why, do ''journalists"
write about AIDS and the gay community and
display such obvious ignorance to our
community's efforts against AIDS? Can
Thompson or any "dispassionate" observer not be
aware that "safe sex" as a policy and a practice
began in the gay community? (Thompson, at one
point, implies that the gay community opposes
safe sex.) Thompson even cites the declining rate
of infection in New York, Los Angeles and San
Francisco. This is not a peculiar incident of the
disease, it is the result of an organized community
determined to survive this holocaust, often
without outside support.
Thompson needs further education but, of
course, it would be non-objective to consults gays
fighting this battle as we are prejudice at best and
unreliable in any case. In all fairness to Thompson,
he may be an unwitting tool of this new frontal
attack on the "gay AIDS activists?' But frankly, his
sources reflect more likely a collaboration with the
likes of Fumento.
The larger question must be is this an episode or
a new advocacy from TIME? After all, this is the
publication that some three years ago did not find
500,000 gay men and lesbians marching in
Washington "newsworthy?' We have a moral
obligation to all those who have died and all those
infected to wage this war not only on this disease
but also those who would, in the name of medical
science, attack our very efforts.
And now a commercial message:
LOBO continues as the leader in gay video in
Houston: We offer the best prices and the largest
selection of gay videos for sale. And the LOBO
Video Club is the largest such club in the United
States, offering the widest selection, the best
prices, and the friendliest service in Houston. This
is not journalistic hype, just plain fact. Give us a
chance to prove it.
