Transcript JANUARY 28, 2000 • HOUSTON VOICE community Lesbian conference hopes to attract more diversity COMMUNITY CALENDAR OCCASIONS • BUSINESS DIRECTORY MY STARS • CLASSIFIEDS • CARMART February event set to raise funds for 13th Annual Texas Lesbian Conference by KAY DAYUS Organizers of the 13th Annual Texas Lesbian Conference are shifting into high gear in preparation for this year's event, to be held in Llouston May 19-21. The conference is in search of an artist to design a logo incorporating the event's theme, "Power in Motion," as well as volunteers and presenters for workshops. This year's three-day event promises to be exciting and informative, said Christine Burchette, a conference co- chairwoman. "We are trying to do our best to reflect our community and have the whole community represented," Burchette said. The conference will follow the format of previous events and include guest speakers, entertainment and workshops. But there is at least one key difference, Burchette said: Organizers hope to attract more lesbians who are ethnic minorities. To help, more speakers and entertainers at the May event will be recruited from diverse backgrounds, she said. On May 19, Urvashi Vaid, former executive director of the National Gay and lesbian Task Force, will deliver the conference's opening address. Vaid was recently named by Time as one of the nation's 50 most promising leaders under the age of 40. She also wrote "Virtual Equality: The Mainstreaming of Gays and Lesbians." On May 20, cartoonist and author Alison Bechdel, the creator of the cartoon strip "Dykes to Watch Out For," will discuss how her drawings have evolved over the years. African-American Poet Ntozake Shange will deliver an address on May 21. Shange's poetry has been translated to Broadway, winning her critical acclaim. Her impassioned writing tells what it is like to be of color and female in the 20th century. Hispanic comedian Marga Gomez is slated to entertain the event's expected 300 participants. Billed as an exotic comedian, Gomez has opened for the likes of k.d. lang and Linda Ronstadt. Her film credits include "Sphere" with Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone, and "Batman Forever." Workshops are also planned throughout the weekend. Organizers are search- Doggy Daycare Center lt'» Ol BoOj's Life... tome live it with us! Volunteers are also needed to bolster the 15 already recruited, she said. Financial assistance for the event has come from Lesbians in Business and the Lesbian Health Initiative. Organizers also plan a fund-riser to help defrav costs of the event. That event—"Red and White Ball"— will be held Feb. 12 at Club Rainbow and Christine Burchette, co-chairwoman of the Texas Lesbian Conference, needs more volunteers to help stage the three-day event. take on a Valentine's Day flavor, Burchette said.
