Transcript HOUSTON VOICE • JANUARY 28, 2000 OUT ON THE BAYOU 23 RESTAURANT REVIEWS Eating Out A sublime old world r \h\ by KATHREEN LEE Jumping on the gentrification bandwagon of Montrose and Neartown, CAPR1CCIO has a head start in establishing itself as one of the premier restaurants in the burgeoning area. We were ushered to a cozy table in the corner of a quiet atmosphere with simple decor. It helps meet Capriccio's self-proclaimed "Old World dining environment." Some of the old world mingled with the new, as a solo guitarist harmonized old Beatle's tunes to a slow classic jazzy beat. Choosing appetizers was a difficult task; the menu's descriptions left me wanting all of the delicious options. 1 narrowed it to the Martin Avocados ($9.95), which are avocados stuffed with crab meat and dill lemon sauce, the Capriccio Cakes ($9.95), crab cakes with blueberry and bleu cheese sauce, and the Cozze Bianco ($8.95), sauteed mussels with marinara sauce. Opting for the Capriccio Cakes turned out to he a delectable choice. With crab cakes, I'm used to one lump of crab, predictable stuffing and little garnishing. But these crab cakes came in four, thick, finger- sized servings with a dark and crispy exterior and a soft interior. Capriccio shows a unique flair by adding Capriccio 414 West Gray Houston, Texas 77019 713-807-1111 Ftood: £>£>&>£>£ Service: fjy cr Cr Value: & S5 S5 £ Scene: T^ S5 S5 £ Opt for bread, water at home OK, if you really must Fine for most Worth the drive, so live a little As good as it gets ANO BAR The quality of the entrees was no surprise considering the appetizers. avocado, a sure and quick way to my heart. The crab cakes were served on a bed of mixed greens, and the blueberry and bleu cheese dressing made a second appetizer. My companion chose the Piatto Di Mare Capriccio ($9.95), which is sauteed escargot with crab meat, shrimp and scallops in Vino Bianco Sauce. She enjoyed the soft and tender texture of the meat, describing it like "eating clouds." The mixture of garlic and white wine sauce perfectly complimented each other, she said. She declared the dish to be "sublime." Asa further incentive to try this well-prepared appetizer, the leftover sauce in the escargot tray serves as an excellent dipping option for the house bread. The quality of the entrees was no surprise considering the appetizers. Capriccio has an extensive poultry, seafood, meat and pasta menu. 1 chose the Polio Alia Casservola ($12.95), which are small, ice-scream scoop sized rolls of chicken breast sautteed with Italian ham, spinach, mozzarella cheese and prociutto. The tender chicken meat envelops an inner core of ham and spinach, which is drenched with a creamy picatta sauce. My companion tried the Cozze Bianco Con Gambrietto ($15.95), a mixed seafood dish of mussels, shrimp, crawfish and monkfish served over linguini with a spicy marinara sauce. She lauded the copious amounts of seafood and tangy seasoning, which eradicated any briny overtaste. The service was well intentioned, but faulty. Our somewhat clueless server lettered us grated mozzarella cheese for our pasta and then proceeded to sprinkle parmesan. Other simple lapses, like confusing Cabernet Sauvignon for a white wine, or failing to be attentive, werebother- some, but we were enjoying the food and relaxed atmosphere and weren't in a rush to finish. Capriccio offers Sunday brunch and services for large parties, but the combination of the quiet atmosphere and outstanding cuisine make this place an excellent choice for a special or romantic occasion.
