Transcript | ^S^r^lSf-Ji*? I 6 JUNE 20, 2003 SPECIAL ADVERTISING SEaiOH GO! Gays live Carefree in new community I I magine waking one day to discover that all of your neighbors were les- I bians and gays. Queer people suddenly would be in the majority. Same-sex couples would hold hands while walking down the street or exchange affectionate pecks in public places. Dances at the neighborhood clubhouse would see women dancing cheek to cheek and men asking other men to join them for a circle 'round the dance floor. It would seem almost too good to be true. Certainly, pockets of this kind of existence can be found. Dances at GLBT community centers or lesbian and gay cruises offer safe environments in which we can play for a short time. But when the dance is over, or the cruise ship docks in port, we're back to living life in a straight world. It's a problem that Gina Razete and Cathy Groene of CGR Development decided to tackle by creating an exclusively gay and lesbian living community. "Vacations just aren't enough for most people," says Razete, the company's president. "In a day to day living situation, to be surrounded by lesbians and gays is an incredible experience," She notes that even though we may be out of the closet, in most communities Located in the North Carolina mountains, Carefree Cove promises an environment where gays and lesbians can be themselves 24-hours a day. we're not really free to live as openly as we might like. "We've created our own community where we can be who we are 24 hours a day," she says. "For most people who come to our communities, it's like being a kid In a candy store." Carefree Cove, CGR's newest gated, lesbian and gay commu nity, is located on 165 acres of North Carolina forestiand. So far the company has completed development of thirty five lots, with twenty already sold, When development at Carefree Cove is complete, there will be a total of 95 wooded lots, ranging in size from three quarters of an acre to one and three quarter acres. In real estate developer parlance, "developed lots" are those where the infrastructure — roads, water lines, and the like — is completed. After purchasing the lot, the new owner can begin building a home. Homes at Carefree Cove are to feature an "upscale rustic' aesthetic, with construction limited to log, wood, and stone. So far, one house is completed and three others are in the building process. The finished community also will feature a number of amenities for Its residents. Plans include a clubhouse with swimming pool, hot tub, and exercise room, a social hall for dances and parties, a hobby room, and a kitchen. The clubhouse will be the hub of the community; the focal point there is expected to be the large stone fireplace. As an additional benefit for residents, the developers have set aside over one hundred acres as common ground. There will be hiking trails, gardens, and a stocked pond for the community's trout fishers.
